Know the pest

Mosquitoes and ticks in the Inland Northwest

Ticks come first. The Rocky Mountain wood tick is the one most people find here, and it is most active from early spring into early summer in brushy, grassy, and wooded areas. It can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Colorado tick fever and can cause tick paralysis in people and pets.

Mosquitoes take over in summer, breeding in standing water, river backwaters, lake edges, and irrigated ground. West Nile virus is found in Idaho and Washington mosquitoes most summers, so cutting down activity around the yard is about health as well as comfort.

Common questions

Mosquitoes & Ticks questions

When is tick season in North Idaho?

Ticks become active as soon as snow melts and temperatures warm, usually in early spring. Activity is highest from about March to June and drops off in the heat of summer.

Do ticks in Idaho carry Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is uncommon in the Inland Northwest, and the ticks that spread it are mostly found west of the Cascades. The Rocky Mountain wood tick, which is common here, can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Colorado tick fever.

How can I cut down mosquitoes in my yard?

Empty standing water at least once a week, including buckets, toys, birdbaths, and clogged gutters. Keep grass and brush trimmed, and pair those steps with seasonal yard treatments for the best results.
