Wasp & Yellowjacket Control in North Idaho

Yellowjackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets build fast through the summer. We treat active nests and help cut down the number that come back next season.

Know the pest

How wasp season works in North Idaho

Only mated queens survive the winter. In spring they come out of hiding and start small nests on their own: paper wasps under eaves and deck railings, yellowjackets in old rodent burrows, wall voids, and landscaping, and bald-faced hornets in trees and shrubs.

Colonies grow all summer and peak in August and September, which is when yellowjackets get aggressive around food, drinks, and garbage. Workers die off with the first hard freezes, and old nests are not reused the following year.

Signs to watch for

  • Steady wasp traffic in and out of one spot on the house
  • Gray paper nests under eaves, soffits, or deck boards
  • Yellowjackets flying in and out of a hole in the lawn
  • Buzzing or chewing sounds inside a wall
  • Heavy wasp activity around trash, fruit trees, or patios

Common questions

Wasps & Yellowjackets questions

When is wasp season in North Idaho?

Queens start nests in spring, colonies grow through summer, and activity peaks in August and September. Activity drops off after the first hard freezes in fall.

Should I seal up a yellowjacket nest in my wall?

No. Plugging the entrance can push yellowjackets to chew their way into the house instead. The nest should be treated first.

Will wasps reuse an old nest next year?

No. Wasps and yellowjackets build a new nest each year, but a spot that was attractive once often draws a new queen, so preventive treatment helps.
